Green Mountain Booster Station
Huntsville, AL
Information
Cleary Construction recently completed the Green Mountain Booster Station and Pipeline Installation for Huntsville Utilities in southeastern Huntsville, Alabama. This $5.2 million project is a critical component of the city’s ongoing efforts to improve water service for the Green Mountain community. Due to the area’s elevated terrain and continued residential development, the existing water system had experienced challenges keeping up with increased demand.
The project included the construction of a new booster pump station and the installation of approximately 2,800 LF of 10-inch welded steel transmission pipe. The new pipeline was installed through steep, rocky terrain to expand the volume and reliability of water supplied to residents in the area. This work represents the first phase of a larger, multi-phase infrastructure improvement plan that is also expected to include a 150,000-gallon elevated storage tank and additional system upgrades.
Superintendent Cody Strode and his team successfully managed the pipeline installation while coordinating with the subcontractors responsible for constructing the booster pump station. A major project milestone occurred during system start-up on April 15, 2025. Representatives from Huntsville Utilities, the electrical contractor, the engineering team, and Cleary Construction were on site for the start-up. The booster pumps operated successfully and exceeded the target operating pressure of 420 PSI.

Cleary is proud to have partnered with Huntsville Utilities on this important infrastructure project. The completed booster station and transmission pipeline will help provide a stronger and more reliable water supply for the growing Green Mountain community. The project has received positive feedback from both local residents and the City of Huntsville.
Challenge
The steep and rocky terrain along Green Mountain created difficult installation conditions, even for sections requiring trenches only three feet deep. The original construction plan also required the existing water main to remain in service while the proposed transmission line was installed within the same limited work area.
The welded steel pipe presented an additional challenge because its interior lining could be damaged by the heat generated during field welding. The utility crew had to carefully protect the lining while ensuring each pipe connection met the project’s installation and performance requirements.

Strategy
With approval from the city, Cleary installed a temporary bypass line to maintain water service throughout construction. This allowed the crew to remove the existing water main and reuse the original trench for the new 10-inch transmission line, reducing the amount of excavation, material, labor, and time required to complete the work.
To protect the interior lining of the welded steel pipe, the crew used a specialized tubular insert during the welding process. This prevented the liner from burning while the pipe sections were joined and placed into position. Through careful coordination and a continued focus on efficiency, Cody Strode and his crew successfully completed the installation and delivered a system that surpassed its target operating pressure.
