Mars Hill Church Rd to Pine Mountain Pipeline
Marietta, GA
Information
Cleary Construction completed the Mars Hill Church Road to Pine Mountain 36-Inch Pipeline Replacement for the Cobb County–Marietta Water Authority. This project replaced aging 30-inch, 36-inch, and 42-inch prestressed concrete pipe with approximately 24,700 LF of new 36-inch zinc-coated ductile iron water main, improving the strength, capacity, and long-term reliability of a critical transmission line.
The project began near the intersection of Mars Hill Church Road and Dogwood Lane and continued along Mars Hill Church Road, Acworth Due West Road, and Old Stilesboro Road. The alignment then extended through an existing easement from Paul Samuel Road to the Pine Mountain Ground Storage Tanks, where the new pipeline connected to the existing water system near Pine Mountain Circle and Stilesboro Road.
Cleary provided the labor, equipment, and materials necessary to install the new water main and related system components. The work included clearing the easement, removing sections of the existing pipe, installing air release valves, blowoff valves, 36-inch gate valves with test stations, and 3M marker balls. Crews also completed traffic control, permitting, temporary paving, trench cap paving, pavement striping, pressure testing, and disinfection.

The completed pipeline provides the Cobb County–Marietta Water Authority with a more durable and dependable transmission system. By replacing the aging prestressed concrete pipe with zinc-coated ductile iron, the project will help maintain consistent water flow and support reliable service for the surrounding community for years to come.
Challenge
The primary challenge was replacing a major transmission main while keeping the Pine Mountain Pump Station operational throughout construction. Taking the existing pipeline completely out of service would have disrupted an important part of the water system, requiring the work to be carefully sequenced and completed in multiple phases.
The project also followed several active roadways and crossed established easements, creating additional challenges related to traffic control, access, excavation, and coordination with Cobb County DOT. Crews had to remove or abandon portions of the existing pipe while working within a limited corridor and maintaining safe conditions for motorists and nearby residents.

Strategy
Cleary installed a temporary 12-inch ductile iron backup feed to maintain service to the Pine Mountain Pump Station during construction. The existing transmission line was then isolated and drained in sections, allowing the new 36-inch water main to be installed through a carefully planned phased process.
Each section of the new pipeline was installed, pressure tested, disinfected, and placed into service before crews moved on to the next phase. This approach limited system interruptions and allowed the water authority to maintain operations throughout the project. Through detailed planning, traffic coordination, and phased construction, Cleary successfully replaced the aging pipeline while preserving reliable water service.
